When you're setting up a scan in TradeStation and you're not getting any search results, there could be several reasons.
One is that there are currently no stocks that are matching your selected criteria. This is especially true if it was working at one time Check which stocks you're including in your scan to make sure you're including enough stocks to find candidates that meet your criteria.
Another possible reason is that your scan isn’t set up correctly. Make sure that there’s a green checkbox in front of each of the filter criteria you’ve added. Also in TradeStation, if you don’t properly set the “Load Additional Data” field, you’re likely to see zero results in the scan. This field determines how many bars are loaded before it starts to do its calculations. In your charts, TradeStation automatically determines how many bars to load before an indicator starts to appear on your chart. In scans and radar screens, this isn't automatic. You must explicitly state how many bars to load. If you leave the Load Additional Data field at its default 0 value, it's likely that you'll never see any results. We find that using 150 or 200 in this field usually helps resolve this issue.
If you're getting zero results or results in the scan that don't match what's on the chart, double-check that any scan criteria that have a timeframe setting are set to match the chart you're looking for them on. That is, if you're looking for an EMA crossover on your 30-minute chart and your Interval criteria are set to the default daily timeframe, then your results won't match unless you're looking at the daily chart.
One other thing to try is to make sure the scan is working by temporarily removing some of the complexity in your scan. That is, if you have 5 criteria in your scan, try relaxing some of the criteria by unchecking the green boxes in front of some of your more complex criteria. Then run it and see if you're getting results. For example, if you use three criteria, and the first is Close > 10, then try running the scan with all of the checkbox unchecked except for that first criteria, and see if you get results. If you do, then you have shown that it's working without some of your more strict criteria. If not, then check your settings until you get a result (e.g., if you search across all stocks > $10 and you don't get any results, you know something else is preventing it). Once you see the results you would expect, add in each criterion by enabling them one by one to see when it stops giving results. Focus on the criteria that prevent results from appearing.
And remember that Load Additional Data setting must be adjusted up for each of your indicator-related criteria.
If you’re still not seeing any scan results, you can view the contents of the LOG tab of the scan for hints as to the cause. You can find the log tab at the bottom of the results area. It’s normal to see some errors in the log even when the scan is working properly, since some stocks don’t have enough data available to meet some of the scan’s requirements. (You can ignore some of these errors by checking the Ignore the scan criterion for symbols that do not have a valid value in the indicator scan settings.) But you may also find some other information in the log that could point to potential issues. If you see something other than these types of messages, they could be identifying potential reasons why a scan isn’t providing results.
When asking for support’s assistance with a scan issue, it's usually helpful to include screen captures of your fully-expanded scan settings, the results, and also the Log tab to help determine potential sources of the problem.
