Many traders have several different accounts that they need to keep separate, and it can be difficult to remember which is which when the default names are used. You may have a mix of Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, HSA, SEPs, and just ordinary brokerage accounts, and they may have names like "Contributory", which may not be as helpful as "Traditional IRA".
You can rename them to something that's easier to remember. Log onto the Schwab website and click the Accounts button to see a list of all of your accounts. Then click the Settings button, as shown above, and a list of all accounts with editable names will appear. Make sure you get the names correct when you make this change so you use the right account for its intended purpose. Click the Save button when you're done.
It may be helpful to take a before/after snapshot to remind you of the old names, should you need to refer to them in past printouts, references, etc. Note that in the summary, you will see the last few digits of the account number and the type of account, such as an IRA or an HSA.
The new names will now appear on the site and also within Thinkorswim. With a careful renaming to assure each account is named correctly, clear names makes it easier to know which account is which on the site and in Thinkoswim.
