Volume is likely defaulted to ON in Thinkorswim (TOS), and many traders elect to disable it. Regardless, if you want to see volume bars, you can enable them in Chart Settings.
The easiest way to open chart settings is to use CTRL+S or click on the gear icon at the top of the chart. You'll see a number of tabs across the Chart Settings dialog that appears. The first 5 tabs have settings that apply to all types of markets, while the last 4 (rightmost 4) are specific to the listed market types: Equities, Options, Futures, and Forex. Note that if none of those categories match the market you're looking to chart, it's probably the Equities tab that you want to use.
Select the tab that you want to enable volume for, and then checke the Show volume subgraph option so a checkmark appears in the box, as shown here:
When this box is checked, Volume bars will appear on your chart... that is, for symbols that have volume. Some symbols, like SPX, aren't traded and have no volume, so you won't see volume bars in TOS if volume doesn't exist. (SPX options are traded, and therefore do have volume, but you'll need to enable the similar button under the Options tab to see option volume.) If you check the Show volume subgraph checkbox under the Equities tab, then all symbols considered an Equity by TOS will have volume display enabled where available. This doesn't enable the other types of markets - they must also have the similar checkbox enabled to get volume for that market class.
You can select the color used for the Volume bars under the Chart Settings' Appearance tab. Volume can be colored the same as the bar colors (Choose Color as symbol ticks) or can be selected by clicking on the color hash mark to the left of Preset color, where you can choose from the default 16 colors, or hit the More button to select from several different color models.
Using Volume Overlay
By default, TOS will show the volume in a subgraph below the main price chart. To save space, you can ask that the volume data be overlayed onto the price chart. This is set via the Chart Settings' General tab, by placing a checkmark in front of the Overlap volume selection just above the Data Box choice, shown in the image, below. In the image, the checkbox is not checked, so the volume bars will appear below the chart. However, if you squeeze the chart height to be smaller, at some point, TOS will automatically overlap the volume bars onto the price chart, regardless of the setting. Expanding the chart vertically to give it more room allows it to spread out once again if the checkbox isn't set.
