Some Base Camp Indicators that are downloaded from the indicator download page are in a compressed format known as a “zip” file. They will have a .zip file extension, or may appear as a folder with a zipper on it.
In some case you do not want to unzip these files, because the trading platform expects a zip file when importing them. That’s the case with NinjaTrader – it expects an add-on to be a .zip file. So you do not want to unzip a NinjaTrader add-on file.
Other indicator downloads, such as thinkorswim downloads, are typically provided in a compressed zip format even though that’s not what thinkorswim wants when importing them. thinkorswim does want the files unzipped or uncompressed before importing them.
So it’s important to know whether you need to decompress a zip file or not. The approach to be used is shown in the Indicator Installation videos that are provided under the Support page on the BaseCampTrading.com website.
If you find that you do want to unzip a file, Windows 10 has a built-in ability to uncompress a zip file. If you right click on a zip file, windows offers an Extract All option that you can select, as shown in the installation videos. That will create a folder in the same directory as the zip file, with the same name as the zip file (without the .zip extension), and then unzip all the files into that folder. What you’ll then see is the zip file and the expanded zip file right next to it in a folder with the same file name.
If your version of Windows, or Linux, etc. doesn’t have built-in decompression tools, you can use a program like Winzip (https://www.winzip.com/) or 7-zip (https://www.7-zip.org/) to decompress a zip file. Winzip is a commercial product that charges a fee, while 7-zip is open source and free. You can choose either or those, or any other unzipping tool that you can be confident is safe to use. Then follow the installation instructions to install the utility, and follow their instructions on how to unzip your compressed files using your chosen solution.
